As soon as I heard we were doing a lens based workshop I was instantly excited. I wouldn't go as far to say that I'm good at it but I definitely enjoyed because outside, taking photos and experimenting with joiners.
David Hockney, an English painter, started to create a range of collages that he named 'joiners' in the early 1980s.
After the brief, we all split into small groups to go take photos, that we'd later use for creating joiners, of either a person, object or place. To begin with I wanted to take photos of people and collate the joiner from different features from peoples faces however I struggled with the lighting in order to get a clear image. For someone who is comfortable working behind a camera this would probably be a quite a trivial problem but I did struggle so decided to switch my attention to an object instead.
I chose a tap as my object as it was stationary and I could move around it; taking photos from differently angles to use later on. I preferred this method as the tap was against a wall giving me a simple background for my joiner. I really like the shadows that it created and the eeriness that comes with it due to the rust and chipped paint.
I also like that the picture almost appears in black and white, however I think using something with more colour would've made for a more interest joiner later on.
Originally I thought I would have enough photos to use for the joiner but after cutting some out due to them being blurry; I didn't have many, or at least enough that I would've wanted, to work with. If I had decided to use this object sooner, I could've taken more relevant photos to use for the joiner. However, I really like a lot of the photos that i took before deciding on this object and would like to explore using them to create another joiner in the future.
