This Monday we were split into small groups and given the challenge to design a fashion garment, from sheet foam, and a variety of other materials. The foam was set to make up the main body of the item, with us only being allowed to make certain cuts into it. Each group was given the same brief and choice of materials- so obviously they all looked completely different!
There were seven of us in our group, each taking different roles to work together and create a great garment! With each of us having our own styles and interests within art, the planning and designing process was really enjoyable. I found that we worked really well together whilst still having a laugh in the process!
The garment itself took shape right at the end of the workshop. We began the day by cutting the foam and trialling different styles and silhouettes to see whether our design was possible. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to put emphasis on the shoulders by creating peaks with the foam. Once we knew this, we diverted our attention away from the foam and onto some black netting. Overall, I think our designing process went well however we did get a bit excited about some materials- especially the black netting! Because of this, we did rush the design of the top but we were still really happy with the outcome. Added features like the
flower corsage on the hand and the yellow flower in the centre of the garment helped to tie the look together; linking the pattern of the black netting to the rest of the garment.
If we were to do it again I would probably suggest that we spend more time planning how the components will look together, rather than creating two pieces and then having to figuring out how to attach them in a way that looked seamless.
We decided to name our look 'Purple Rain' as the top was quite a vivid purple and the black netting draped down the leg.
After lunch, we went outside, lined up in our garments and presented them in our very own cat walk! This was good fun as it allowed our final pieces to be brought to life, incorporating personality into our work to present our vision. I really enjoyed this as we got to see everyone elses's designs nd see things that we hadn't thought about doing. It was really interesting hto hear about how groups overcame certain obstcles they discovered when making their garment as this helped us to see where we could've taken our design if came across similar issues, and I'm sure this was felt by other groups too.
Overall, this exercise was a great one to start the course with! Having never considered investigating fashion in art and design, it has helped grow my appreciation for the complexities found in fashion, especially on the runway!
